Subtitled 'the industrial archaeology of quarrying' this book looks at understanding the quarrying operations that went on from the remains. The main body of the book examines 16 quarrying areas in England while introductory chapters explain how quarrying was done and what effects this will have had on the present-day landscape. A theme is that quarrying techniques, and remains were largely unchanged for centuries and later work tends to obiterate earlier work. One suspects the quarry archaeologists lot is not always a happy one.
